What must be my attire on the day of the test?

You can put on whatever you want. You will change into hospital clothes for the exam. Please do not take along valuables. At the time of the test, you will be given a box to store your belongings.

What happens during the echocardiography test?

The cardiac sonograph puts three electrodes sized(small, flat, sticky areas) on your chest. The electrodes are connected to an electrocardiograph (ECG) monitor, which records your heart's electrical activity during the test.
The sonographer will ask you to lie on your left side on the examination table. The sonographer places a rod (called a sound wave sensor) in different parts of your chest. The bar has a small amount of gel at the end that will not damage your skin. This gel helps create clearer images.
Sounds like a Doppler signal. You may or may not hear sounds during the test.
You may be asked to reposition many times during the test so that the sonographer can take clear pictures of different parts of your heart. You may also be asked to hold your breath from time to time.

How do I feel during the test?

You will not feel any sort of discomfort during the test. You can feel a cooling sensation on the skin from the gel on the sensor and a little bit of pressure from the sensor on your chest.

What is the duration of the test?

Typically it lasts about 40 minutes. After the test, you can change and go home or go to other scheduled appointments.

How do I get test results?

After the cardiologist evaluates your test, the results will be entered into your electronic medical record. Your doctor will have access to the results and will discuss them with you.
